Volunteering with us
Giving your time and energy to helping orphans is probably one of the most rewarding experiences you will have in life, and is often life changing. The children will delight in your company, knowing that around the world there are people who care. No special skills are required - all we ask is that you are enthusiastic, self motivated, passionate about making a difference, and have a great respect of human life.
We enjoy a relaxed and informal environment here at Amani CDP, and we prefer to allow volunteers the freedom to help in a way that is comfortable to the individual. The children, young and old alike, benefit deeply from the attention, nurturing and love which they receive from our volunteers. However, the Aunties also appreciate a little of your time helping in the morning, perhaps with hand washing or in the kitchen.
Where will I stay?
We have a brick built guest cottage within the compound and, whilst simple, it is perfectly comfortable. You will be provided with 3 meals per day and fresh ground water is available from the well and the guest room has electricity. There are purpose built outdoor wash areas and latrines, which you will share with the staff.
The location of Amani CDP is quite idyllic, with far fetching views over the green hills, a variety of birds and flowers, maize fields, and neighbours discreetly tucked away. But please remember, this is rural Kenya and we are currently without a sewerage system or piped water.
For those of you on longer visits or who prefer greater comfort an alternative option is available at our guest house in Kisumu which has electricity, mains water and flush toilets! You would travel to the orphanage once a week and stay for 3 days and 2 nights per week, and the rest of the time is yours to spend as you wish. As this is a more leisurely option and provides, for the greater part, a higher standard of accommodation, the cost is higher. How much will it cost?
We really appreciate your time and effort, however since we are a charity and always struggling to make ends meet, we do need to apply a cost to cover your food and accommodation. Your fee will also provide a valuable income to the orphanage.
We are a small, independent organisation and this is reflected in the costs outlined below, but which also reflects the steep increase in the Kenyan cost of living and value of the schilling. Please also know that your money goes directly into Amani CDP, helping to support the orphans. We do not charge a registration fee. The fees are calculated on a "longer stay lower pay basis" which is full board, ie bed, breakfast, lunch & dinner. Payment is due before you arrive.
